Ackroyd

['ækrɔɪd], Peter, englischer Schriftsteller, * London 5. 10. 1949; verfasste kritische und kulturgeschichtliche Studien sowie Gedichte (»London Lickpenny«, 1973; »Country life«, 1978); als Biograph trat er hervor mit »Ezra Pound and his world« (1980), »T. S. Eliot« (1984; deutsch), »Dickens« (1990) und »Blake« (1995; deutsch »William Blake. Dichter, Maler, Visionär«). Seine Romane knüpfen an literarische Vorlagen an und untergraben deren Wirklichkeitsanspruch: »The great fire of London« (1982) gibt sich als Fortschreibung eines Dickens-Romans, »Hawksmoor« (1985; deutsch »Der Fall des Baumeisters«; verfilmt) stellt Konventionen des historischen Romans bloß.

Weitere Werke: Romane: The last testament of Oscar Wilde (1983); Chatterton (1987; deutsch); First light (1989; deutsch Die Uhr in Gottes Händen); English music (1992); The house of Doctor Dee (1993); Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem (1994); The trial of Elizabeth Cree. A novel of the Limehouse murders (1995).
